As you may know in 2005 we have published the Bugatti Register The Netherlands- Belgium. The main impetus of this endeavour is to identify as many original Molsheim products as possible. I am a great admirer of those who have built cars with Molsheim parts and who by doing so have kept the myth alive. I can also understand that companies like Pur Sang build cars for those who cannot afford the real product and who want to have a Bugatti experience as closely as possible, but I strongly object against those who try to sell a Pur Sang as the real Molsheim product- which can only be done for greed. It is and it will always remain a replica, and I know Jorge Anadon and Andres Buta will agree with me.
One of the problems is of course how much Molsheim content should a car have, as a recent experience where a Pur Sang built on a genuine 38 frame supplied by Bruno Vendiesse is advertised as 'genuine 43202' with full history from 1928 onwards and 'six important previous owners' and ready to be accepted in The Mille Miglia, Le Mans, Monte Carlo etcetera.
The publication of the Register has led to such a wealth of new information that we have decided to publish two sequels, The Bugatti Register The Netherlands- Belgium Vol II and Vol III, which each in principle contain new cars, so they do not contain the same information. Vol II mainly focuses on Belgian Bugattis. There are also articles like one on the Bugattis owned by the Belgian Royals (with cooperation of the Royal Palace and of the deceased racer and automotive journalist Paul Frere) and Bugattis that have raced at at Spa- Francorchamps.
Vol II will be available soon. I will be at The Retromobile on 6 and 7 February. I hope to have the books available. Provided the books are finished any of you who is going to the Retromobile can pick up your books. As the previous time I will be at the stand of Jaap Braam Ruben and Bruno Vendiesse. However this time it is more difficult: most if not all buyers want matching numbers and I do not know whether I can take all books there to pick out the appropriate number at that location.
Maybe you can send this message around to other owners of Vol I and other Bugattistes who come to the Retromobile and who might be interested in Vol II with matching numbers. If they want a specific number they can mail me the number they want. This does not apply to the stolen books. I have not yet made up my mind what to do with those owners. On the one hand they have bought the books not knowing that they were stolen, at a price much higher that what they normally would have paid (at the last Retromobile the last copy sold went for 450 Euro, 600 US$) , on the other hand this has left us with a considerable loss. In principle it is one book per person. I already had e-mails from Bugattistes who want to buy 4 or 5 books and from traders who want to buy 10 copies at a time. I have a limited number of reprints of Vol I. They can only be bought with the accompanying Vol II. As each book is personalised prospective buyers of Vol I and Vol II need to give their names, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail address and so on and also be prepared to have a scan made of their identity card.( I will take a scanner with me on the stand)
As the only way to track the matching numbers is to distribute it from a central site I would like to do this gradually. The books will from now on at first be offered to all BIG and BCN members who were not present it the BCN meeting and Belgian owners who have contributed material, after that to members of the other Bugatti Clubs and finally to the greater public.
Looking forward to your reply
